‘‘It’s one of the murkier conflicts I’ve seen,’’ Verini says. ‘‘It began needlessly and
cynically, in Russian aggression and propaganda. Yet it has lasted as long as it has
because it’s become a struggle for identity in Ukraine. The war has forced Ukraine
to decide what it is as a nation.’’

Behind the Scenes
Kathy Ryan, director of photography:
‘‘For this issue, James Verini writes about
the ongoing war in eastern Ukraine.
We assigned the photographer Paolo Pellegrin
to document the front lines. Paolo is a
seasoned confl ict photographer who has been
documenting historic events around the
world for decades. Th is war has a peculiar
stillness about it that Paolo managed to
imbue with the intensity of what’s at stake.’’
