igh tides force these waders from their coastal mudflat feeding
grounds, pushing them towards the shore. The temporarily
displaced birds gather in dense flocks, and at favoured estuaries
such as the Wash and Morecambe Bay their aerial formations
can be spectacular. Once settled, the thousands of tightly packed
bodies create their own microclimate, keeping the birds warm.
