T he jihād of Muslims is, of c ourse, part of t his engagement in t he West , but it
is equally so in all the c ountries of the South. It is a wholehearted jihād along the
line of Sout h Americ an c ommunit ies who express it in t he form of liberat ion
theology, or as it is manifested in the popular and trade unionist forc es in the Near
East and Asia. Fut ure int er- religious dialogue will undoubt edly find it s fulfilment in
suc h strategy and ac tions. However, we c annot think of the future in terms of
polit ic al and ec onomic reform wit hout working for t he rec onst it ut ion of a soc ial
tissue whic h is nowadays torn apart the world over.
