Around De Maria gathered the dialect


poets Ugo Ammannato (1906-1959), Miano


Conti (1905-1957), Nino Orsini (1908-1982),


Pietro Tamburello (1910) and the very young


Paolo Messina (1923).


At the end of 1945 the meetings stopped,


as the Township decided to give the great


hall back to the Gallery of Modern Art.


Nonetheless, in that climate the groundwork


was laid for a radical renewal of Sicilian


dialect poetry, which would become more


evident in subsequent years, characterized,


according to Salvatore Di Marco’s


reconstruction, by the affirmation of the


literary value of the best Sicilian linguistic


tradition, discovering a project of koinè that


would bestow the literary dignity of
