A 2lb increase in the minimum weight
at which jockeys are asked to ride,
which is to be introduced in March, has
not been well received by the riders
whose wellbeing it is intended to help.
The British Horseracing Authority
(BHA) revealed yesterday that, from
March 26, the lowest weight for Flat
races will be 8st 2lb, while over jumps it
will be 10st 2lb.
The change is an attempt to mitigate
the effect on jockeys of closing saunas
Flat jockeys unhappy despite rise in minimum weight
on racecourses, which happened when
racing returned in June 2020 after a
Covid-enforced break.
However, the move has not gone
down well with jockeys, particularly
those on the Flat who have to ride at
lower weights than their jumps coun-
terparts and generally struggle more.
Since racing resumed, jockeys have
been allowed a 3lb “Covid allowance” to
help them ride at their allotted weight
without recourse to unhealthy
methods of weight loss such as saunas,
which cause dehydration.
The rising of the minimum weight inFlat races to 8st 2lb will help jockeys
who previously would have had to ride
in races at 8st but it will not benefit
those higher up the weight range.
Richard Kingscote, who was riding at
Lingfield Park yesterday, told Sky
Sports Racing: “I don’t want to speak for
all jockeys but, collectively, we’re not
very happy. We were given a question-
naire vote, which everyone responded
to, and we said we’re happy to lose the
saunas if we keep our [3lb] allowance.
“For the last two years we’ve been
with no saunas and we’ve managed
because we’ve had the extra weight [al-lowance]. Now we’ve got no saunas and
no extra weight. It’s only going to lead
to young lads throwing up.
“You try running 4lb off round the
track if you’re running late — it’s not
going to happen. If you go in the sauna
for 20 minutes you’ve got a chance. If
you’re stuck for doing [it] overweight or
throwing up, there are some young lads
who’ll make some bad decisions.”
Fellow Flat jockey Jason Watson
agreed. “Whoever makes these deci-
sions should come and live a day with
us,” he said. “We feel like we’ve been
cheated out of what we agreed to [theremoval of saunas but retention of a 3lb
weight allowance]. I’m disgusted.”
Dr Jerry Hill, the BHA’s chief medi-
cal adviser, saw the change in a more
positive light. “The closure of saunas on
our racecourses represents a significant
step forward for jockey wellbeing,” he
said. “A permanent raising of the mini-
mum weight is the correct response.
“Our jockeys are athletes who should
be primed to perform to the best of their
ability like any other. Shedding pounds
by dehydrating in a sauna minutes
before being given the leg-up onto a
horse is not the best way to ensure that.”Rob Wright
