f the expression Amanda
Staveley wore as she descended
the steps of the Airbus A320
after landing in Jeddah on
Sunday evening appeared
pensive, then there is good reason.
For four years Staveley pushed to end
Mike Ashley’s ownership of
Newcastle United and usher in a
vibrant period in the club’s history.
The next six days will go a long way
to deciding if the club can begin an
attack on the top-ten place they want
next season, or whether the drawing
board will involve another campaign
in the Sky Bet Championship.
Last night Staveley and the club’s
board submitted a £34 million bid to
Lyons for their Brazil midfielder
Bruno Guimarães. The 24-year-old’s
representatives have not commented
on an offer that would treble their
client’s current salary but Newcastle
have stolen a march on Arsenal, who
like the player. Yesterday morning,
Seville demanded more than the
£30 million Newcastle have so far
offered for Diego Carlos.
Newcastle, backed by the wealth of
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment
Fund (PIF) may not be in the market
for galácticos, but they have the
financial power to outmuscle most of

deals Newcastle need

to avoid Championship

Europe’s top clubs. They are starting
to flex it. Staveley has a 10 per cent
holding in Newcastle and a place on
the club’s board, but it is the
management contract that she was
awarded to run operations that will
come under most scrutiny before the
transfer window closes on Monday.
Sitting at the wheel of the richest
football club in the world is proving a
more uncomfortable ride than many
had perhaps foreseen.
Carlos has so far proven outside of
their valuation, despite his desire to
move. Newcastle are keen on the
player, but Seville, fighting for a first
La Liga title since 1946, have stood
firm. The £30 million offer is not
enough. Lille proved similarly
immovable with regards to Sven
Botman, the first of the two targeted
central defenders.
“Newcastle won’t be held to
ransom,” a source told The Times.
“There is a valuation on a player they
will not exceed. Do not expect a team
of galácticos. That is not how a
sovereign wealth fund works.”
Newcastle’s supporters had danced
outside St James’ Park when it was
announced that PIF, with a sovereign
wealth fund of £700 billion, had taken
an 80 per cent holding in the club on
October 7. Newcastle were technically
worth more than every Premier
League rival combined.
As of yesterday afternoon 193
players had been linked with moves
to St James’ Park since the club were
bought for £305 million, from Real
Madrid’s Eden Hazard to Arsenal’s
Bernd Leno. Reality has come calling
since then. Newcastle still do not have

a chief executive or a director of
football. Nicky Hammond, the former
Celtic head of football operations,
arrived briefly, but had left by
Christmas, his role believed to have
been a review of transfer valuations.
It appears, then, that Newcastle
entered their first window post-
Ashley with a small and not overly
experienced recruitment team that
entrusted Staveley, the head coach,
Eddie Howe, his No 2, Jason Tindall,
and Newcastle’s long-term head of
recruitment, Steve Nickson, with the
task of finding players to arrest a run
of form that had produced only one
victory all season until Saturday’s win
away to Leeds United.
Before that game Howe had spoken
for the first time of his frustration that
no new players had been added to
Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood, the
two signings who joined for a
combined fee of almost £40 million
early in the window. He would like
Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard. A
second loan offer, believed to be
about £5 million, is being considered
by United’s board.
There have been further
conversations since the squad landed
in Jeddah. Staveley is in regular
contact with Yasir al-Rumayyan, the
club’s chairman. Al-Rumayyan had
been at St James’ Park for the shock
FA Cup defeat by Cambridge, but the
loss is not believed to have hastened
the search for new players.
Success in their pursuit of the
thrice-capped Guimarães would take
Newcastle’s spending this window to
£71.5 million and the pressure to
deliver is now intensifying.

Ten big names

hoping to move

before deadline

Jesse Lingard,
Manchester United, 29
The attacking
midfielder does not
want to join Newcastle
United on a
permanent deal, given
their position. United
want between
£6 million and
£10 million as a loan
fee, and are reluctant
to let him rejoin West
Ham United.

Arthur Melo,
Juventus, 25
The midfielder has
indicated he wants to
join Arsenal on loan if
the Italian club can
find a replacement.
The 25-year-old
playmaker has mainly
played on the left of a
midfield three.

Aaron Ramsey,
Juventus, 31
The Italian club have
been keen to offload
the midfielder, who
earns about £250,000
a week but has played
only three times this
season. He has
rejected Burnley and
has been offered to
Crystal Palace and
Newcastle United.

Bernd Leno,
Arsenal, 29
Leno has been offered
on loan to Newcastle
United and German
clubs for the rest of
the season, before a
permanent exit; he has
one year left on his

contract this summer.
He would be replaced
at Arsenal by Matt
Turner, the United
States goalkeeper.

Adama Traoré,
Wolverhampton
Wanderers, 26
Tottenham Hotspur
could have to pay
more than £20 million
for the winger who
would be converted
into a right wing back
by Antonio Conte,
who would try to
offload Matt Doherty.

Dusan Vlahovic,
Fiorentina, 21
The Serbian striker is
one of the hottest
properties in world
football. Arsenal have
offered more than
£50 million but he now
seems on the verge of
a move to Juventus.

Christian Eriksen,
free agent, 29
The midfielder,
who had a
cardiac arrest on
the field seven
months ago, has
been having
health checks
before a proposed
move to Brentford.
He left Inter Milan
after Serie A rules
would not allow him
to play with an
implantable
cardioverter
defibrillator. He has
been training with his
old club Ajax.
