European Landscape Architecture: Best Practice in Detailing

modelling, the functional needs of the project were
analysed and incorporated into the design, together
with environment considerations and the quest for
aesthetic beauty. This approach to design creates
projects that are very clear in their conception and
very easy to comprehend.

The treatment of rainwater is an important issue
for HYL and often provides a structuring element
in their projects. When the environmental issue of
run-off is taken seriously, the functional need to lead
off and store rainwater becomes a main element in
the concept of the site.

Steep slopes separate the A16 and the park. The
only visual contact between the motorway and the
park is provided by the canals, which are level with
the motorway. High speed drivers on the motorway
may not even notice them. Only by turning one’s
head at the right moment can one become aware

of the park situated on the other side of the slopes.
This visual connection between the A16 and the
park is thus very discreet.
