11 Antum al-Shu'ara'. The influence of French Symbolist poetic theory on 'Aql is
obvious in his introduction to al-Majdaliyya where he is indebted to Mallarme, Val£ry
and AbW Bremond. His debt to French writers has been amply illustrated by Antun
Ghattas Karam in his book al-Ramziyyafi'l Shi'r al-'Arabl al-Hadith (Beirut, 1949).
'Aql continued to write, though little. For instance, besides the two verse plays
Bint Yaftah (1935) and Cadmus (1944) he published another volume of verse Rindala
(1950). He attained great popularity, especially in the 1940s but he is not much read
now, although he had some influence on some Lebanese poets, especially the early
Yusufal-Khal.
