TheconstellationofOrionappearsaboutmidnight
inNovemberinthesoutheasternheavens. InDecem-
berandJanuary,itisduesouthabouteleveno'clock.
In February, you will find it southwest about ten
o'clock. Andin MarchandApril,itis inthewest,
andthensetsbelowthehorizon.
OntherightofOrion,asyoufaceit,andpreceding
it, arethePleiades. Ontheleft,followingitacross
thesky,arethebrilliantstarsProcyonandSirius,the
latterbeingthebrighteststarintheheavens. Orionis
agreatsquare,withthreebrightstarsinarowclose
togethernearitscenter. Below these,three smaller
starsinarowmakeasortofhandlefortherakewhose
teetharethethreebrighterstars justmentioned. By
includinganotherstar tothe right,these stars seem
tooutlineakiteinsteadofarake.
Thiskite,orrake,isveryreadilyfound,asitisone
ofthemostconspicuousspectaclesinthisregion. The
threeupperandbrighterstarsinadirectline, some-
timescalledthethreekings,composethebeltinOrion.
Thethree lower and dimmer stars are called the
swordofOrion. Themiddlestarinthisswordisthe
nebula. Eventothenaked eye,itappearsblurry,or
cloudy.
