Andtruescience,too,joins inthedenialofhisself-
evidenterrors. How,forexample,canlifecomefrom
somethingthat isnotlife? Oneofthehighestlaws
of his beloved evolution is the law of "conformity
totype"; thatis tosay, "Likebegetslike." Yethe
believed—because,and onlybecause, he neededthe
thing in his business—that something entirely dif-
ferentfromlifebegotlife.
Thewholecreationspeaks,ifitspeaks atall,ina
waytodemonstratethestatementsoftheWord.
Thereis, forexample, no possible way forus to
conceive how theuniverseitself can maintain itself.
Howcaneachandeveryparticleofmatterconstantly
maintainanattractiveenergyforeachandeveryother
particle of matter? How can this mighty flow of
power be maintained undiminished throughout the
ages? Wecannotconceiveofsuchaflowwithoutan
ideaofanadequatesourcefromwhichitflows.
Again,theheavenlybodiesareallinmotion. That
motionisunceasingfromagetoage. Theaverageis
constant. Inthecaseoftherotationoftheearthon
itsaxis,causingdayandnight,thereisnottheslight-
est variation in velocity, not by the fraction of a
second.
We know how difficult it is with us to maintain
motion. We musthave some supply of energy by
whichtoaccomplishit. Butthestarsdriveonthrough
space with untiring power. Can they drive them-
selves? Even our automobiles, "self-moving ma-
chines,"areinrealitygasoline-movedmachines. They
