Butitwasnotdesignedthat,havingseentheworkings
ofinfinitepower,we shouldcease ourinvestigations,
until wehadcometotheall-sufficientsourceofthat
infinitepower.
Thus viewingtheWord, wehaveseentheGodof
power,buthave failedtostudytheworkings ofthat
power;andviewingtheworkingsofthat power,we
havefailedtoperceivetheGodofthepower. Which
mistake is the greater, we need not discuss. God
meantustomakeneither. A freeknowledgeofGod
mustintimeleadustoaknowledgeofHisworkings

andanignorance ofGod, asintheDarkAges,must
produceignoranceofHisworkings—thatis, stagna-
tioninscienceandinscientificresearches.
Butletnoonethinkthatanytheoryofgravitation
willbecompletewhichleavesoutofconsiderationthe
greatPrimalCause. Thatthereareabsurditiesaswell
asthingsbeyondhumanconceptionin thehypothesis
scientistshaveadopted with referencetothispower,
allscientistsknow.
How some ofthem feelabout these difficulties is
wellstated inthefollowing words:
**We must not imaginetheword 'attract'to mean
toomuch. It merelystates the fact that there is a
tendency forthebodies to move towardeach other,
withoutincludingorimplyinganyexplanationofthe
fact. So far, noexplanation hasappeared whichis
less difficult to comprehend than the fact itself.
Whether bodiesare drawn togetherbysome outside
action,orpushedtogether;orwhethertheythemselves
canactacrossspacewithmathematicalintelligence,
