THEPOWEROFGRAVITATION 59

TheBiblehasitspartinrevealingthetruthofthe
attraction of gravitation. Itdeclares:

  1. Thatthere issuchapower;

  2. Thatitupholdsallthings; and—
    3.That thecausativeagentisthewordofGod.
    Onthesethreepointsitstands,aboveallscienceand
scientificresearch; and it always must, in thevery
natureofthecase, so stand. Science onlyshows its
    utterfollyandweaknesswhenitattemptstoenterthis
domain of the Word with any other doctrines and
    philosophies.
    Butinthatmatterofthestudyofgravity,science
    hasitslawfulandhelpfulplace. Therearesomefacts
    involvedinthegreatprincipleannouncedintheWord.
    Justwhatthese factsarecannotbeascertainedbya
    studyoftheWordalone,orbytheWordatall;they
arenot there revealed. Onlythe truth is therere-
vealed; the factsare revealed elsewhere. Thefacts
    mustbefoundbyastudyoftheworks. Andonlyby
    astudyoftheworkscantheybefound.
    Thefactswhichsciencemaydiscoverandannounce,
    andwhich,indeed,ithasfoundandmadeknown,are
two: namely, that this force of attraction between
particles is (i) directlyproportioned tothemass of
    theattractingparticles,and(2)inverselyproportioned
    tothesquareofthedistancebetweenthem.
