betweenbodiesofequalmassincreaseswhenthenum-
berofparticlesis increased,anddecreases whenthe
numberofparticlesdecreases. Thatis,thepoweract-
ingisalwaysproportionedtothenumberormassof
theparticles itactsupon.
Astothesecondfact:Whenweincreasethedistance
betweenparticles,wedecreasethepullbetweenthem;
andwhenwedecreasethedistancebetweenparticles,
we increasethe pull. That is, the pull is inversely
proportionedtothesquareofthedistancebetweenthe
thingspulled.
Thesetzvofacts,andwhattheymean,arewellstated
byHenry White Warren, D.D. Wemake a slight
changeinthewording,tofitourpurpose. "Thelaws
governingthis attractionaretwo. When these par-
ticlesareassociatedtogether,theattractionisinpro-
portiontothemass. Agivenmasspullstwiceasmuch
asonehalfthesize,becausethereistwiceasmuchto
pull. And a givenmass ispulled twiceas muchas
onehalfaslarge,becausethereistwiceasmuchtobe
pulled. A manwhoweighed onehundred and fifty
poundsontheearthmightweighatonandahalfon
abodyaslargeasthesun. Thatisonelawofattrac-
tion;andtheotheris,thatmassesattractinverselyas
thesquareofdistancebetweenthem. Absenceaffects
friendshipsthathaveamaterialbasis. Ifabodylike
theearthpullsa manone hundredand fiftypounds
atthesurface,orfourthousandmilesfromthecenter,
itwillpullthesamemanonefourthasmuchattwice
