Thiswaswritteninanswertoastanzacomposedbyanother
Zenmonkwhoclaimedtohaveimderstoodthefaithinitspurity.

TheywereboththedisciplesoftheFifthPatriarch,Gunin

hismantleandcarryinghisbowlashistruesuccessorinZen.
Thisrecognition bythemasterofthesignificationofthefirst
stanzabyYenostampsitastheorthodoxexpressionofZenfaith.
Asitseemsto breathethespiritofnothingness,manypeople
regardZenasadvocatingnihilism.Thepurposeofthepresent
chapteristorefutethis.
