A


s I mentioned in Chapter 1, the project manager’s job is
extremely diverse—at least you’re supposed to make it that
way. In fact, the single, most useful piece of advice I’ll offer you
is “Think like a generalist.” This means avoiding the natural ten-
dency to devote too much of your attention to those aspects of
the project that are familiar and comfortable. This is just one of
the many challenges you can expect to face as you assume the
role of project manager. Let’s take a closer look at your role by
examining it from three angles:


  • the responsibilities you’ll have

  • the challenges you’re likely to face

  • the skills you’ll need to be successful
