A


fter some brief soul-searching, Brad has determined that he’s
mentally prepared to take on his new role as project manag-
er. He believes he understands what’s involved in the role and is
very eager to begin work. So is Susan, who has just called him
into her office. As she hands him a folder, Susan says, “Brad,
here are the requirements for Project Apex. They were developed
by our Operations folks, with a little help from Marketing. I’d like
you to get going on this project right away, OK?”
As Brad fans through the surprisingly thick folder, Susan
remarks, “Good luck, Brad. Oh, by the way,” she adds, “if you
should have any questions or need anything at any time during
the project, please know that my door is always open.”
“Thank you, Susan,” Brad answers. “I’m sure I’ll do a great
job on Project Apex.”
He turns and immediately heads back to his office, where he
starts leafing through the project requirements folder. The require-
ments state that an additional production line is to be installed in
the manufacturing department. There’s also some information on
a new procurement procedure that needs to be put into place. It
