this in Chapter 7,
“Preparing a Detailed
Project Plan”) As you move
forward, it’s important to
allow each team member
to play a major role in
defining his or her specific
work on the project.
In the meantime,
developing an organiza-
tional chart (sometimes
known as an organizational breakdown structure) for your proj-
ect team is an easy way to help everyone understand the roles
and responsibilities of team members. A sample is shown in
Figure 5-1.
Team Leadership Starts on Day One!
As Brad will soon find out, managing the project team begins
immediately. From the moment that people are assigned to
your project, you’re responsible for ensuring that they’re head-
ing in the desired direction. This often requires significant tact
and influencing ability. Since you’re in a matrix organizational
environment, you have no formal authority over them, so
you’ve got to be able to lead appropriately.

The organizational chart or
breakdown structure can be used as a
template when you form the team.As
you identify required functional posi-
tions, you can place the appropriate
department name on the chart.Then,
as specific individuals are assigned to
your project, you can add their names.
