The National Bureau of Asian Research
nBR is a nonpRofit, nonpartisan research institution dedicated to informing
and strengthening policy in the Asia-Pacific. It conducts advanced independent
research on strategic, political, economic, globalization, health, and energy issues
affecting U.S. relations with Asia. To attract and train the next generation of Asia
specialists, it also provides internship and fellowship opportunities to graduate
and undergraduate students. NBR was established in 1989 with a major grant
from the Henry M. Jackson Foundation.
Slade Gorton International Policy Center
the CenteR honoRs Senator Gorton’s living legacy of service to state and nation
by sponsoring world-class policy research and inspiring the next generation of
leaders. It was founded in 2010 by a group that includes former Gorton staffers,
Senate colleagues, friends, and family. The Center is a core program of The Na-
tional Bureau of Asian Research, focusing on three areas: policy research, fellow-
ship and internship programs, and the Gorton History Program.
The Gorton Legacy Group
the gLg Was founDeD in 2001 by women who have worked with Gorton during
his six decades of public service—from the Legislature to the Attorney General’s
Office to the U.S. Senate and a host of other public service endeavors. Long be-
fore women were regarded or treated as equals in the workplace, Slade opened
the doors of opportunity. Over the years he has recruited hundreds of women
for key positions. Women and men who worked for Slade received equal pay,
equal respect and the same obligation to meet the high standards he always sets.
The result is three generations of women who owe much—professionally and
personally—to their mentor. The GLG’s mission is to perpetuate this legacy.
Soon after its inception, the GLG altered its bylaws to include former male
staffers. They were equally resolute in wanting to honor their mentor.
