protein and relatively low in carbohydrates.
Migraine headaches in women may turn out to be the cloud with the
silver lining. A new study reveals that women who have migraines expe-
rience less cognitive decline than women who don’t have them.^12

SUGGESTIONS FOR MIGRAINE HEADACHES*


➤ Niacin test for metabolic type and food allergens (see
Chapter 2). If you have a balanced metabolism and therefore
can digest all kinds of protein, choose a red meat diet and limit
carbohydrate intake.
➤ Thyroid supplements. Take a glandular such as Thytrophin
(made by Standard Process). If you take a synthetic form of
thyroxin, take a supplement containing the active T3 as well as
T4. See Chapter 5, Thyroid Problems, for other causes of
hypothyroidism.
➤ Butterbur. This is the most effective herb for migraines. It
improves blood fl ow in the brain. For those with severe
migraine headaches that last more than a week, taking one
capsule a day of feverfew along with one capsule of butterbur
is a highly effective preventative.
➤ Progesterone. Choose natural progesterone in the form of
cream applied where blood vessels are close to the skin, such
as the neck, the wrist, and inside the elbows. Follow the
directions on the container. In addition, skip it for one week
every so often.
➤ Vitamin E (400 to 800 units a day). Vitamin E bolsters energy
production and eliminates free radicals.
➤ Omega-3 fats and oil. Omega-3, good for depression, is
found in green, leafy vegetables; eggs; saltwater fi sh,
particularly mackerel, salmon, anchovies, and sardines; and
omega-3 supplements.
➤ Air cleaner. Use an ionizer with an ozone maker to clear the
air of allergens, bacteria, molds, and toxic particles. (See
