two regions. Dopamine cells die out when they are exposed to infl amed
cells in the substantia nigra. Once there are not enough dopamine cells
to coordinate the functions between the substantia nigra and the stria-
tum, the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease emerge: tremors, lack of
coordination, stiffness, and speech problems.
Research studies show that a major cause of Parkinson’s is the inabil-
ity to digest animal fat protein, particularly red meat. The January 1999
issue of Movement Disorders reported a study in which 103 patients were
compared with a control group of the same size.^13 The study found that
individuals who ate the most meat were 300 percent more likely to
develop PD. In another study in Brazil, thirty-one PD patients with a
defi ciency in vitamin B 2 (ribofl avin) were given 30 mg of B 2 every eight
hours and forbidden to eat red meat. After six months, the patients’
motor capacity had increased nearly 30 percent.^14
Exposure to pesticides and herbicides has also been implicated in
PD. A startlingly high percentage of professional fi eld hockey players
have PD. There is speculation that the cause is the grassy soccer fi elds
they play on. There is not a weed growing on any of these soccer
fi elds—because they are heavily sprayed with chemicals.

SUGGESTIONS FOR PARKINSON’S DISEASE*


➤ Intravenous glutathione. Glutathione is a powerful
antioxidant that destroys free radicals. It relieves many
neurodegenerative diseases in addition to Parkinson’s,
including Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, fi bromyalgia, and
cystic fi brosis.
➤ N-acetyl cysteine and organic whey protein. These
supplements enhance the body’s production of glutathione.
➤ Vitamin B 2 (ribofl avin) (15 to 50 mg/day).
➤ A vegetarian diet for those who can’t digest meat
protein, and for meat eaters as little meat fat as possible.
