nerves, thereby lessening the severity of seizures or stopping them
altogether. Saturated fats may also act by patching up the holes and
tears in brain cellular membranes through which toxic waste infi ltrates
the cells.
Medical research is based on the premise that cures for brain disease
depend on discovering how the brain functions. But the thrill of dis-
covering unknown brain functions—for example, the way neurons
transmit or store memory or the amount of fuel the brain uses up dur-
ing problem solving—clouds the real issue: how to heal the brain
abnormalities that cause mental disorders. This healing depends on
three factors: individual differences in food metabolism and eating hab-
its; the condition of the thyroid and respiratory brain machinery; and
nutritional and enzyme defi ciencies in the brain. When any or all of
these factors cause the brain to malfunction, since the brain controls
the thought processes, regulates mood, and coordinates movement, a
variety of behavioral and muscular disorders follow.

SUGGESTIONS FOR EPILEPSY*

➤ Progesterone. Progesterone helps prevent seizures. Buy
natural progesterone, in the form of a topical cream, and
apply where blood vessels are close to the skin, for example,
the neck and wrist. Follow the directions on the label. Go off
the hormone periodically for a week. According to chemist
Ray Peat, Ph.D., progesterone works in three stages: it
soothes, then protects, and fi nally causes the brain cells to
regenerate.^23
➤ A ketogenic diet. Follow a ketogenic diet, in which four
times as much saturated fat as protein and carbohydrates is
consumed, that is, 4 g of fat to 1 g of protein and
carbohydrate foods. (See Resources for additional
information.)
➤ Coconut oil. All of this supersaturated fat is used as a fuel to
produce energy. It is therefore the best type of fatty acid for
an epileptic individual on the ketogenic diet.
