158 Achieving pH Balance to Treat Specific Ailments

How Glaucoma Develops
The interior of the eyeball is fi lled with a transparent jellylike fl uid called
vitreous humor. The pressure this thickened fl uid exerts is what gives the
eyeball its balloonlike contour. There is another, far smaller amount of
fl uid in the eyes that is more watery than vitreous humor, called aqueous
humor. Located in a tiny chamber between the pupil and the lens, it does
what the thick jellylike fl uid can’t do. It fl ows, and as it does so, it drops
off nutrients and oxygen for the cornea and picks up waste products. The
waste-fi lled watery fl uid fl ows out of the chamber into a narrow canal
and from there to the outside of the eye. This elimination process works
well—unless the drainage canal becomes so clogged with waste that the
fl uid can’t drain out of it. In a clogged canal or duct, this waste-fi lled
fl uid builds up and puts pressure on the vitreous humor in the interior
of the eyeball. The vitreous humor, in turn, puts pressure on the retina
in the back of the eye. If the pressure is great enough, it destroys the
retina’s nerve cells (the rods and cones) and causes blindness.

Eliminate Acidic Waste to Treat Glaucoma
The only way to save the eyes from going blind in glaucoma is to unclog
the waste-fi lled duct so as to relieve the pressure on the retina. Massive
doses of vitamin C can do this. Dr. Michele Virno, in an experimental
research study, used 0.5 g of ascorbic acid for every 2.2 pounds of body

Steve was saved by immigrating to the United States where
he was given antibiotic treatments that cleared up his infection.
But he suffered one aftereffect of the infection years later:
glaucoma.
His ophthalmologist wanted him to use eye drops, but Steve
insisted on trying natural remedies fi rst. He took vitamin C,
biofl avonoids, and bilberry liquid extract. He also took the rest of
the supplements on the “Suggestions for Glaucoma” list (see end
of this section) for three months. After about six months, tests
showed the pressure in his eye had dropped to 15, which was
within the normal range.
