Good night vision also depends on replacing pigment. Vitamin A
maintains healthy eyes, but for glaucoma patients lutein is more effec-
tive. Besides bolstering the rod cells, lutein also improves the function
of the cone cells on the periphery of the retina that help us see in bright
light. Egg yolk is an excellent source of lutein.

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is a loss of vision in the macula, the central por-
tion of the retina in the back of the eye. The macula, a yellow-
pigmented area, being in the middle of the retina, bears the brunt of
the image-carrying light rays that are refl ected on it. While the outer
area of the retina picks up peripheral images, the macula absorbs the
images we see when we look straight ahead. It is thanks to our central
vision that we can calculate the distance between ourselves and what-
ever it is that we are looking at.
