to raise estrogen levels, which can cause miscarriage. The prospective
mother should eat foods that will satisfy the nutritional requirements
of the fetus. The prime consideration should be extra sugar because
higher-than-average blood sugar levels are necessary for the production
of suffi cient energy to sustain the growth of the fetus. Vitamins E and
A as well as magnesium help maintain normal blood sugar, as does the
appestat mechanism, by causing the expectant mother to crave sweets.
The craving for sweets should be satisfi ed by eating fruit. Not only
is the fructose in fruit healthier than refi ned white sugar, but all fruits
are rich in potassium. Potassium in the blood acts like insulin, facilitat-
ing the entry of sugar molecules into cells where they are used to pro-
duce energy. Potassium also removes sugar from the blood without
causing blood sugar levels to drop precipitously the way elevated insulin
does. When insulin levels are high (caused by the overconsumption of
white sugar and refi ned carbohydrates) it lowers blood levels of calcium
and phosphorus, which are needed to build the bones of the developing
fetus. The old adage “a tooth lost for every child” acknowledges the
draining of calcium reserves from the maternal blood supply. A study
done in Norway confi rms that in the later months of pregnancy, blood
calcium levels become defi cient.^14 A highly mineralized water helps
make up for the loss of alkaline minerals during pregnancy and also
helps maintain the alkaline pH of the blood.
Another important dietary measure during pregnancy is an increase in
fats. The expectant mother’s body relies increasingly on fat for its energy
needs since the fetus uses up her supply of blood sugar and also because
fatty acids in the maternal blood are used in the synthesis of the fetus’s
cellular membranes. What kinds of fats should the gestating woman
eat?
The commonly held belief that most people are defi cient in omega-3
fi sh oil is being shattered by the latest fatty acid research, conducted by
Dr. Patricia Kane, a researcher at the Body-Bio Corporation (the Body-
Bio Corporation tests fatty acid blood levels). It reveals there is a grow-
ing defi ciency of omega-6 fats in many people due to the avoidance of
meat fat, butter, and eggs in an effort to lower cholesterol. While
omega-6 polyunsaturated oils such as corn, cottonseed, sesame, sun-
fl ower, and canola should not be consumed during pregnancy because
they lower blood sugar, organic meat fat, raw egg yolk, and butter are
