branches are balanced can eat all kinds of protein. There is some varia-
tion within each of the three metabolic types. When all the organs are
functioning at the same rate of speed, the body is said to be in a state
of homeostasis.
Another method for individualizing diet is based on blood type. Dr.
Peter J. D’Adamo, N.D., postulated that blood type O, the oldest blood
type, developed in response to the meat diet of the hunter-gatherer
before the cultivation of grains began in various parts of the world
between nine thousand and eleven thousand years ago. Type O individu-
als, like their meat-eating ancestors, according to D’Adamo, need large
amounts of meat and small quantities of carbohydrates. In fact, type O
individuals, with their high levels of stomach acids needed for breaking
down meat, have a tendency toward an underactive thyroid and need
vigorous exercise. They fi t the profi le of Kelley’s parasympathetic-
dominant metabolic type. (Kelley, however, recommends meat, fat, and
butter for the parasympathetic dominant, whereas D’Adamo suggests
lean meat for individuals with blood type O.)
Blood t ype A, according to D’Adamo, represents an adaptation to the
cultivation of grains. Blood type A’s need for grains and light exercise,
and its slow rate of digestion, fi t the profi le of the sympathetic domi-
nant. Blood type B, D’Adamo states, evolved as a result of the migration
of tribes to colder climates. It would also seem to represent an adapta-
tion to dairy products and could explain why so many Asian Indians,
with their long history of drinking cow’s milk, have blood type B.

The Logic Behind the Meat Eater–Grain Eater Diet Plan

When the individual is in a poor state of health, it’s a sign that the
systems of the body aren’t functioning at normal speed. The fi rst step
in normalizing the rate at which the organ systems function is to
normalize the speed of digestion. This is where the meat eater–grain
eater diet plan comes in. When the individual is eating the foods right
for her, the rate of digestion is normalized, so acid waste levels drop
and acid-alkaline pHs in the fl uids throughout the body become bal-
anced. As a result, the speed at which the organ systems function returns to
normal.
Before implementing the meat eater–grain eater diet plan, test your
acid levels (see the Metabolic-Type Niacin Test that follows). This self-
