rotation diet, by ensuring an adequate supply of enzymes and insulin,
prevents the high blood sugar that causes diabetes.
The four-day rotation diet is especially effective in individuals who
build up acidic wastes because of digestive juice defi ciencies. But it is
less effective in cases where degenerative disease is caused by allergic
reactions. Multiple sclerosis—the deterioration of the myelin sheathing
on the nerve cells—is an example of a disease in which maladaptive
reaction to foods is nearly always caused by allergies. That’s because it
usually strikes individuals in their thirties—at an age when most indi-
viduals, while experiencing a drop in digestive enzyme levels, still have
enough that they haven’t developed serious digestion problems. Thus
the fi rst step in the program to reverse the course of MS should be
allergy testing. If this doesn’t work, try the four-day rotation diet. The
key to the success of the four-day rotation diet is the rotation of foods
rather than the kind of foods eaten.

The Role of Enzymes

Even before Dr. Kelley devised individual diet plans according to meta-
bolic type, like Max Gerson, he had accomplished a signifi cant number
of cancer cures by putting all his patients on the same diet. I knew two
of his patients whom he had successfully treated with a standard diet in
conjunction with enzymes and juicing: an elderly lady, considered ter-
minally ill with lung cancer, and an airline pilot. Kelley had seemingly
cured the pilot of liver cancer. At the end of fi ve years, however, he had
a recurrence. Kelley assured him that these were simply residual cancer
cells and he’d be fi ne if he stopped eating meat that had been injected
with hormones. It has been several years since he put Kelly’s advice into
practice, and he hasn’t had a recurrence.
The success of the diets of Gerson, Kelley, and Nicholas Gonzales,
Kelley’s successor, is due to their emphasis on enzymes. They not only
prescribed lots of pancreatic enzyme supplements with meals but also
made solid and juiced vegetables and fruit (eaten raw to preserve their
enzyme content) the cornerstone of their diet regimen. In doing so, they
revived a practice based on the discovery of a nineteenth-century Scot-
tish embryologist, Dr. John Beard, who developed the theory that pan-
creatic enzymes could destroy cancer cells. Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez, M.D.,
