All that was left to do
was try to help the man
in the picture not look
as if he couldn’t stay
awake. This sort of
touch-up requires a leap
of faith. You assume the
younger woman is his
daughter, and therefore
she’s likely to have
inherited his eyes. The
Healing tool enables an
organ transplant of
sorts. The eye on the left
fit with little fuss, but the
eye on the right
required some darken-
ing with the Burn tool,
which emulates when
photographers in film-
based darkrooms let
light shine through cir-
cles they made with
their hands to darken
chosen areas of a print
they were exposing
with an enlarger.3
For a final touch, a sepia tint not
only gives the photo an antique
touch, but helps disguise any
flubs in the touch-up job. With a
bit more work, we might have
been able to make the family
smile. But that would have been
wrong.4
