CHAPTER 13 HOW PHOTO-QUALITY PRINTERS WORK^195

Droplets are so small, in fact, that it is only when they are combined that we
have something big enough to measure in dots per inch (dpi). All current-
model inkjet printers can create at least 300dpi printed graphics, which is not
fine enough to avoid such artifacts as thejaggies—also called aliasing—the
stair-step edges you find along edges that should be smooth and straight.

The more dots that go into creating a
photo, the sharper the details and the more
it approaches the resolution of a good tra-
ditional photograph. The current state of
the art is 9,600dpi, although that’s likely
to be only for black. A more common top
resolution for color is 4,800dpi.
