CHAPTER 1 THE WORKINGS OF A DIGITAL CAMERA^13

Optical viewfinder:Gives you a way
to frame your image, often combined
with read-outs of crucial information, such
as aperture and shutter speed settings.
(See Chapter 4, “How Light Plays Tricks
on Perception.”)

LCD screen:Gives you a viewfinder that avoids
parallax error, and is a place where you view
photos you’ve already shot. It also displays a
menu that lets you select settings for the camera
and photos. (See Chapter 4.)

Delete button:Erases a
photo from digital memory to
make room for another one.

Memory card and slot:
An opening in the camera that
allows you to insert a piece
of electronic circuitry to store
the digital image your camera
creates.

Diopter eyepiece correction:An additional lens
on the viewfinder that fine-tunes the eyepiece focus,
usually for the benefit of those who wear glasses, to
accommodate individual differences in vision.
