Lax and tense vowels


A description of whether the muscles of the tongue and mouth are relatively tense or
more relaxed when we say a vowel sound. Although this is not an entirely accurate
physical description, it can be a useful way of thinking about these sounds.


The chart below shows the tense and lax vowels in American English.
