Reduced form of a word
The pronunciation of a word when it is said in normal speech at a normal speed, and
it is not being stressed. For example, the reduced form of and is /ən/ or /n̩/, and the
reduced form of to is /tə/.
In contrast, the pronunciation of a word when it is said carefully, and usually alone, is
called its citation form. For example, the citation form of and is /ænd/, and the
citation form of to is /tuw/.
