Rhotic and nonrhotic dialects
If speakers pronounce the phoneme /r/ after a vowel in words like car and butter, the
dialect is called rhotic. Most varieties of American and Canadian English are rhotic.
If people don’t pronounce /r/ after a vowel in words like car and butter, the dialect is
called nonrhotic. Many varieties of British, Australian, and New Zealand English are
nonrhotic.
