Sibilant


A type of fricative or a"ricate produced with the tongue near the alveolar ridge or
hard palate: /s/, /z/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /ʧ/, and /ʤ/ are the sibilants in English. This group of
sounds may seem louder and harsher than other fricatives like /θ/ or /f/.
