There’s a new lens from Sony, which is the lightest

70-200mm f/2.8 lens for fullframe cameras.

ot content with having
a 70-200mm f/2.8
lens that weighs in at
1,480g, Sony has
released an updated version, the
70-200mm f2.8 GM OSS II, which
weighs just 1,045g. It also has
improved autofocus speed and
adds extra controls, including an
aperture ring with clickless
operation and a DMF switch.

Before this new Sony lens
appeared, the Canon RF
70-200mm F2.8L IS USM was
the shortest and lightest
70-200mm F2.8 lens on the
market. The Canon lens is still
shorter due to its extending zoom
design, whilst the Sony’s
conventional internal zoom
means it always stays the same
length. But there’s not a whole

lot in it, with the Sony being
only slightly lighter.
What is impressive, is how
much lighter this new lens is
compared to its predecessor. It’s
the same length and diameter as
the older model, adds additional
controls including the aperture
ring and extra switches, yet still
manages to reduce the weight by
an impressive 435g.
