T
he northeast of England is
not always noted for a
pleasant climate in the
depths of winter, but last
month Boulmer on the
Northumberland coast was
exceptionally mild, sunny and dry.
In fact, the sun shone so brightly
across Britain it set a new record for
the sunniest January in England,
and the third sunniest January for
the UK. All of which helped to
banish the gloom of last December,
the dullest December since 1956.
Last month was also remarkably
mild and set a new record for the
warmest New Year’s Day in the UK,
16.3C at St James’s Park in central
London. In a curious reversal of the
usual weather pattern, the north of
Britain enjoyed the mildest weather
over the month while the south
suffered some bitter cold, especially
at night, when there were frequent
hard and widespread frosts.
January was also extraordinarily
dry. Even though the month ended
wet in the north, the UK had less
than half its usual rainfall over the
whole month, and England had its
ninth driest January in rainfall
records going back 160 years. Across
England and Wales it was largely
calm, but there was a nasty sting in
the tail at the end of the month
when the violent storms Malik and
Corrie battered much of the north.
Those storms ushered in a more
turbulent weather pattern this
month, especially across northern
Britain, raising the chances of more
heavy rainfalls and strong winds. A
north-south split could carry on,
with depressions sweeping the north
but high pressure and calmer
conditions towards the south.
La Niña in the Pacific, where the
tropical seas towards South America
have turned cooler, often helps drive
mild but strong, wet westerly winds
across the UK in late winter, and
may also raise the chances of a mild
early half to spring. Those westerlies
are being boosted by thunderstorms
sweeping around the tropics, as well
as a strong polar vortex in the
stratosphere over the Arctic —
which means there is little sign of
the freezing cold Beast from the
East this winter.
