what represents success for
scotland?
Jim Hamilton Winning three games.
That would not be an improvement
on the past two championships, but
the fact we only have two home
matches means it would still be a
creditable achievement. So much
comes down to the first two
weekends, at home to England and
away to Wales. The Calcutta Cup
game is very winnable, and if there’s
ever been a time to knock over the
Welsh on their own patch, it’s now.
Win those and I don’t think there
would be any shame in losing to
France in the following game. Beating
Italy in Rome is a foregone
conclusion, then it’s off to Dublin
against an Ireland side we tend to
struggle to match for power. If Ireland
hadn’t done what they did to the All
Blacks in the autumn, I wouldn’t be
tipping them to do much, but I think
that result has scared everyone else in
the northern hemisphere and
probably a few down south as well.
John Barclay Three wins is just about
right in my eyes, too. Scotland will be
targeting a top-half finish, but as we
saw last year there is so little between
five of the teams these days that even

three wins may only be enough for
fourth. Either way, Scotland will need
to be in a much better place than they
were in the autumn, when they never
found their groove. Against that, they
have a settled side and, after two big
away wins last year, the group will
believe they can win every game.
They must also be aware that this is a
great opportunity for them to make a
mark in this competition. Scotland
have not had a squad with this much
grunt and X factor for a long time.

how do you see saturday’s
calcutta cup clash going?
Hamilton It worries me to say this,
but I’m not sure I’ve seen England
looking so disjointed on the eve of a
tournament. With all their high-
profile absentees, they are almost
limping into the Six Nations. I just
can’t see a team like the one Eddie
Jones will be putting out this weekend
— with so much inexperience,
especially of this fixture — rocking up
and beating Scotland. If they do, it’s a
bad look for us. Gone are the days
when we talked about Scotland
pulling out a season-defining
performance to put one over “the
auld enemy” — in pure rugby terms,

we are a better side, with no real
injury concerns. The team should be
expecting, rather than hoping, to win.
Barclay If you were England, you
would be happy coming up this
weekend almost under the radar,
bizarre as that sounds when you say it
out loud. Everyone is writing them off
from the start which will suit them
down to the ground. Scotland should
win this game, but it’s very much
about the opening quarter and the
tone that either side is able to set.

who should townsend pick in
the back row and centres?
Hamilton Jamie Ritchie and Hamish
Watson will be the flankers, but I’m
torn between Magnus Bradbury and
Matt Fagerson at No 8. They make
different but compelling cases, and it’s
too close to call. In the centres, I’m
back wanting Sione Tuipulotu to
partner Chris Harris after his
sensational performance for Glasgow
Warriors at Connacht last week. With
their raw power and pace, he and
Duhan van der Merwe offer Scotland
ingredients in the backline they
haven’t had for years. Cameron
Redpath is one of Gregor Townsend’s
most talented players, but he’s only

had two games after such a long time
out injured, so I’m not convinced it
would be right, or even fair, to bring
him straight back in. I also think
Tuipulotu could be hugely effective
against teams like France and Ireland,
so I would like an early look at him.
Barclay I’d play Redpath with Harris.
Scotland’s attack didn’t function in
the autumn, and though Sam
Johnson has consistently been one of
Glasgow’s best players, the fact teams

are putting so much pressure on Finn
Russell now makes it really attractive
to have someone immediately outside
him who can be similarly creative.
Redpath has great hands, makes good
decisions and can carry and defend. I
get the point about his lack of game
time, but there are different rules for
different players. Even if Finn had not
played for Racing 92 this year, he
would still start on Saturday. In the
back row, Bradbury has evolved his
