game to another level this season.
Picking purely on form, I’d go with
him in an all-Edinburgh unit.
what will be the impact of
crowds returning?
Hamilton We won in Wales, England
and France behind closed doors by
creating our own atmosphere, while
England just couldn’t get anything
going last year. The crowd is always
massive in Cardiff, but I firmly believe
the stage is set for us to win there.
Barclay The only atmosphere close to
Murrayfield on Calcutta Cup day is
the Principality for Wales v England.
How will the young England lads
cope with all the annoyances: the
awkward changing rooms, the slow
drive through the Old Town, Jones
being hammered by fans when he
gets off the bus? In contrast, I have
never seen the buzz be anything other
than a positive influence for Scotland.
WRU will serve weaker beer
to curb antisocial behaviour
Bars in the Principality Stadium will be
shut after half-time and weaker beer
served during Wales’s home Guinness
Six Nations matches this year in an
attempt to cut down on cases of fan
disorder in the stands.
The move comes after a series of
drink-fuelled incidents during the
autumn internationals, which included
pitch invasions on consecutive week-
ends and a drunk spectator vomiting on
a young fan.
The Welsh Rugby Union said that the
new measures would be trialled during
matches against Scotland, France and
Italy. The official brewer, Heineken,
will introduce 4.1 per cent Amstel Bier
that will eventually replace the stronger
5 per cent Heineken. Alcohol will no
longer be sold from the end of half-
time, although outlets will remain open
for food and soft drinks.
“We want supporters to remain pas-
sionate and enthused and to continue
to bring their best voices to the Princi-
pality Stadium but we also need them
out negatively impacting the experi-
ence of a hardcore and significant sup-
porter base who make the Principality
Stadium experience what it is.
“These measures are not radical, but
seek to address an issue recently recog-
nised and it is my commitment to all
Wales supporters we will not stop until
this issue is eradicated.
“We have always boasted we have the
best supporters in the world game in
Wales and believe this remains the case.
We recognise these trial measures will
be welcomed by some fans — others
will feel we’ve either gone too far or
done too little.
“These measures are about getting
the right balance for our fans to ensure
they enjoy a great stadium experience
during the upcoming Six Nations.”
The WRU already has a 4,200-seater
alcohol-free zone in the stadium, which
was introduced in 2018.
Mark Williams, the Principality
Stadium manager, said that the
measures would be “open to review”.
Wembley set to host Fury
v Whyte world-title fight
Boxing Wembley has emerged as
the frontrunner to stage the all-
British heavyweight world-title fight
between Tyson Fury and Dillian
Whyte, The Times understands
(Matt Lawton writes).
Fury will defend his WBC crown
against Whyte in April but so far a
venue for the much anticipated clash
— Fury’s first on UK soil since 2018
— has not been announced.
Cardiff’s Principality Stadium and
West Ham United’s London Stadium
are said to be the other contenders,
but sources have insisted that there
is a desire to hold the bout at the
national stadium, continuing
Wembley’s rich boxing tradition.
Gopperth and Fekitoa to
leave Wasps at end of year
Rugby union Wasps have announced
that Jimmy Gopperth and Malakai
Fekitoa will leave the club at the end
of the season. Gopperth, the long-
serving fly half, has been linked with
a move to Leicester Tigers, while
Fekitoa, the World Cup-winning
centre, has agreed to join Munster.
Lee Blackett, the Wasps head
coach, said: “Jimmy will be fondly
remembered for his cool from the
kicking tee in pressure moments,
including ‘the kick’ [in the 2016
Champions Cup quarter-final] against
Exeter Chiefs. Jimmy’s longevity has
been remarkable, and we look
forward to seeing him contribute for
the remainder of the season.”
Bernal’s second spine
operation after crash
Cycling The two-times grand-tour
winner Egan Bernal was due to have
further surgery on his spine yesterday
after his training crash in Colombia.
The 2019 Tour de France winner
and 2021 Giro d’Italia champion, 25,
remains in intensive care in Bogotá
after hitting a stationary bus at high
speed on January 24.
The Ineos Grenadiers rider suffered
fractured vertebrae, broke his right
femur, right patella and ribs, and
suffered chest trauma and a
punctured lung in the incident.
Bernal was said to be making good
progress, but another update revealed
the need for a second spine operation
after new diagnostic imaging.

Fans will not be able to visit bars after
