1. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS


1.1 Application of Design Standards


As addressed in the Introduction, these standards shall be adhered to for all UIHC pr ojects in UIHC controlled
facilitie s. It is the responsibi lity of the Design Professional to adhere to the standa rds herein. As a part of the
design process, the Design Professional shall submit to the Owner in writing an explanation of i nstances where
sections of t he standards are no t being followed. Each relevant design phase will not be considered complete
until it has been established tha t the standards h erein are adhered to.

This section contains a list of t he codes, regulations and standa rds that Design Professiona ls shall utilize for pr ojects at
UIHC. This section is split into two subheadings to differentiate the requ ired codes and guidelines from reference
standards for specific applications.

1.2.1 Building Codes and Standards


At the time this document was released, the f ollowing code s and standards were approved by the state of I owa t hat all
de sign and construction at UIHC sha ll a dhere to. Design professionals shall validate these are current before a project
begins.
Note: The Iowa State Building Code Chapter 301, 2011 edition establishes IBC 2009 for th e general requirements fo r building construction
in the state of Iowa. However, the fire safe ty requirements of the Life Safety Code, NFPA 101 2000, supersede those of IBC 2006 and shall
be adhered to per Section 301.3(1 ) of th e Iowa Building Code. ADA – Ti tle III Regulations- 28 CFR Part 36; Appendix A 2010 ADA
