- As mentioned in the previous levels, there exists two categories of intervals:
The intervals are:
PERFECT MAJOR or MINOR
Unison Second (2nd)
Fourth (4th) Third (3rd)
Fifth (5th) Sixth (6th)
Octave (8ve) Seventh (7th)
- Up to now, you have learned how to distinguish intervals as perfect, major or
minor. Now you are ready to learn how to distinguish diminished or augmented
Intervals
- A diminished interval is one semitone smaller than a minor interval, which
makes it two semitones smaller than a major interval.
- An augmented interval is one semitone larger than a major interval, therefore,
one tone larger than a minor interval.
- You can therefore state that, by starting with a diminished interval and raising it
by one semitone at a time, you will end at a augmented interval.
The spectrum of intervals is:
DIMINISHED – MINOR – MAJOR – AUGMENTED
