Pareto – An analysis to determine the minority of equipment that is

causing the majority of the problems. Also known as the 80/20 rule.

Process Flow – A method of visually documenting the stages involved

in performing a certain business procedure

Process Parameters – Are certain measures that refer to status of the

process. In order to obtain effective execution of the process its

parameters should stay under continuous control.

Process Variation – Is the statistical description of natural fluctuations

in process outputs.

Specifications – Physical, chemical, or performance characteristics of

equipment, parts, or work required to meet minimum acceptable

standards

Standard Operating Procedures – Is a set of step-by-step instructions

compiled by an organization to help workers carry out complex

routine operations. SOPs aim to achieve efficiency, quality output and

uniformity of performance, while reducing miscommunication and

failure to comply with industry regulations.

Statistical Process Control – A method of monitoring, controlling and

improving a process through statistical analysis. Its four basic steps

include measuring the process, eliminating variances in the process to

make it consistent, monitoring the process and improving the process

to its best target value.

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) – Companywide equipment

management program emphasizing operator involvement in

equipment maintenance and continuous improvement in equipment

effectiveness

Value Stream Mapping – Is a lean-management method for analyzing

the current state and designing a future state for the series of events

that take a product or service from its beginning through to the

customer.

Equipment Reliability

Asset Criticality – A measure of the importance of an asset relative to

other assets

Availability (A) – The probability that an asset is capable of performing

its intended function satisfactorily, when needed, in a stated

environment. Availability is a function of reliability and maintainability.

Breakdown Maintenance – A policy whereby no maintenance is done

unless and until an item no longer meets its functional standard, often

when the asset is no longer able to operate

Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) – Repair or restoration of an

asset based on its condition at the time; also known as on-condition

maintenance

Condition Monitoring – The monitoring of equipment performance or

other condition parameters to determine the condition or health of

the equipment or system. Condition-based monitoring is used as part

of a predictive maintenance program to determine the need for

condition-based maintenance.

Failure – Failure is the inability of an asset component to meet its

expected performance. It does not require the asset to be inoperable.

The failure could also mean reduced speed, or not meeting

operational or quality requirements.

Failure Cause – Are defects in design, process, quality, or part

application, which are the underlying cause of a failure or which

initiate a process which leads to failure.
