Writing Music for Television and Radio Commercials (and more): A Manual for Composers and Students

(Ben Green) #1
Analyzing Commercials!! 63

  1. The assignment is wide open, and I am open to your ideas. Break
    ground! Break the rules!

  2. People who don’t currently shop at XYZ should want to from now
    on.

  3. The spots are 30 seconds, but also come up with something for 60
    seconds.

  4. I want to hear demos in three days.

Additional Exercises

  1. Using a storyboard to work from, lay out a score sheet with ‘‘hit’’
points. These hits should either require effects or mood changes in
the music. The objective is to write a cohesive piece of music. Each
exercise requires a 30-second television score.

  2. Write an arrangement of your final composition for a small combo.

  3. Compose two or three different pieces of music, in dissimilar styles,
for the same commercial. Vary the tempos and moods.
