I have been waiting for ten minutes (and I am still waiting). He has been

studying English for two years (and he is still studying it).

The construction required to deal with sentences like these (e.g. llevo ... esperando,
llevo ... estudiando) will be dealt with at a later stage.

Pluperfect tense

This is used in a similar way to the pluperfect tense in English, i.e. to translate ‘had + past
participle’, for example:

I had started my meal.

They had already asked us.

It is formed with the imperfect tense of the verb haber and the past participle as follows:

Había terminado el trabajo.

I had finished the work.

Ya te lo había dicho.

I had already told you.

Habíamos visto la película.

We had seen the film.

As with the perfect tense, the past participle is invariable – i.e. it does not agree in
number or gender with the subject.
