Vinciane Pirenne-Delforgeis a member
of the Fonds National de la Recherche
Scientifique, University of Lie`ge, and
author of many works relating to Aphro-
dite, in particular L’Aphrodite grecque
(1994). Her research has also focused
on Pausanias, on whom she has pub-
lished (with Ge ́rald Purnelle)Pausanias
‘‘Periegesis’’: Index verborum, listes de fre ́-
quence, index nominum(1997).


Nicolas Richeris Professeur des Univer-
site ́s at the E ́cole Normale Supe ́rieure
Lettres et Sciences Humaines, Lyons,
France. His work focuses on the history
and representation of Sparta in the ar-
chaic and classical periods, and upon
questions of politics and religion in par-
ticular. He is the author of a major study
on the ephorate, Les E ́phores: E ́tudes
sur l’histoire et sur l’image de Sparte
(VIIIe–IIIe sie`cle avant Je ́sus-Christ)
(1998).


Scott Scullion is Fellow and Tutor in
Classics at Worcester College, Oxford.
He is the author of Three Studies in
Athenian Dramaturgy (1994), on the
Athenian theatre and the staging of tra-
gic drama, and of a number of articles on
the history of tragic drama and the rela-
tionship of tragedy with Greek cult, and
on Greek sacrificial practice, the distinc-
tion between Olympian and chthonian,
and religious inscriptions. He is prepar-
ing an introductory monograph on Eu-
ripides for Blackwell’s ‘‘Introductions’’
series.
Emma Stafford is Senior Lecturer in
Classics at the University of Leeds. She
has general interests in Greek religion,
myth, and iconography, and her major
area of research is the place of personifi-
cation in Greek religion. She is the
author ofWorshipping Virtues: Personifi-
cation and the Divine in Ancient Greece
(2000),Ancient Greece: Life, Myth and
Thought(2004), and of two forthcoming
books,HeraklesandThe Trojan War.
The chapters by Pierre Bonnechere, Fran-
c ̧oise Dunand, Madeleine Jost, Vinciane
Pirenne-Delforge, and Nicolas Richer
have been translated by the editor.
