A Study in American Jewish Leadership

(avery) #1
Notes

Most of the material for this study comes from the Schiff Papers in the American
Jewish Archives in Cincinnati. Microfilm reels 676–97 contain drafts of Cyrus
Adler’s biography of Schiff and countless letters written by Schiff that were chosen
from the 80,000 amassed by Adler and Schiff's son. Before 1914, Schiff saved
hardly any of the letters to him, but fuller records were kept for 1914–1920. Those
are found in reels 1976–86 of the archives. Other files of Schiff papers exist in the
archives of the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York and Jerusalem, the
American Jewish Committee, and the American Jewish Historical Society. The
collected papers of a few of Schiff’s associates also contain useful material.
Except for the microfilm reels at the American Jewish Archives, the location of
manuscript files is indicated in the notes for each chapter. Relevant material in
Adler’s first drafts of the biography which appear in reels 676–97, is cited as CA
MSS, with Adler’s pagination where available.
