Spotlight on readers’ excellent images and how they captured them

Peter Hickman,
2017
2 Knowing that
riders often do
a wheelie at this
point, Greg was able
to anticipate the shot.

Joshua Brookes,
2018
1 This shot was
taken on the inside of
a bend, around which
the bikes accelerate
from a relatively
low speed, to try to
capture more detail
of the rider.

Lee Johnson
2016
3 As Greg says,
‘I like the semi-
transparent look
of this image and
combination of
colours. I think it
gives an ephemeral
feel, especially with
the filaments trailing
the bike and rider.’

Michael Dunlop,
2016
4 In the past, when
he shot with a Nikon
D300s, Greg had to
use a polariser and
ND filter to slow down
the shutter speed
sufficiently. Since
moving to a D810,
he has been able to
work with its lowest
ISO of 64 in order to
capture his shots.

Greg Barlow, Isle of Man
Like many, Greg became interested in
photography via another interest – in his case,
aviation. Nowadays, however, his passion is for
capturing the Isle of Man’s TT race. ‘The standard
frozen-action motorbike photos never convey the
experience of witnessing the speed and motion
of the bikes close up,’ he says, ‘so I decided to experiment
with slow shutter speeds. On my fi rst outing, I didn’t know
what to expect, but I soon realised there was potential despite
the low hit rate. By using these slow speeds I am able to
remove detail from the background and convey a sense of
speed.’ See more of Greg’s work at http://www.palebluedot.im.
