We asked for images that gave us a sense of place, and this one has it in spades.
The shadows in the foreground folds retain just enough detail, and the hazy
background hints at a landscape that rolls off into the distance for miles. The tree
is carefully placed on the thirds, and the diagonals that fl ow from bottom left to
top right give the composition a subtle dynamism.

Slot canyons are a hugely popular
subject for those travelling in the
USA, and it’s easy to see why. The
incredible intensity of the red stone,
and the shafts of light that cut through
it, are like catnip to photographers.
In this image, the detail that’s been
captured is superb, while the opening
that’s carved into the sandstone draws
us through the picture.

Here’s an image that’s all about lines,
angles and triangles. Everything from
the Overground train on the right, the
angle of the frame on the left, and even
the small triangle on the top left of
the frame contribute something to the
photograph. And that’s before we get
to the solitary fi gure bang in the middle.
There’s a lot going on, but it all adds
up to a very coherent whole, and the
result is like a still from a science-fi ction
fi lm or a book cover.
