Sou Fujimoto’s scaffolding structure, the
Envision Pavilion, appeared in front of the
city’s Himalaya Art Center in 2016.
XCOD opted for the technique as a
reference to temporary construction sites.
The aim was a ‘work in progress’ image,
which would represent the spirit of the
client, womenswear brand Uooyaa. ‘But the
main reason is a psychological one,’ says
chief designer Alex Xie. ‘We believe the
temporary feeling will make people more
relaxed.’ XCOD is continuing the scaffold-
ing theme at Uooyaa’s Xintiandi store, cur-
rently under construction.
Only the frame of the former aerospace lab
remains. A new roof, fitted with a skylight,
and two extra levels complete the picture.
The fashion brand will utilize the space for a
variety of functions, including catwalk shows
and press conferences.
In addition to Fujimoto, XCOD joins
the likes of OMA and Calvin Klein in incor-
porating scaffolding into recent projects.
And while it finds a more formal applica-
tion in Uooyaa’s office, the scheme is still
temporary in nature – and most definitely
unfinished. – HdH
