Air of Spring

Tapping into today’s

booming wellness industry,

brands and companies

are updating the SPA

EXPERIENCE.

With life for city-dwellers growing
increasingly hectic, relaxation is big
business. The booming global spa market
is projected to reach US$154.6 billion by
2022, and the entire wellness industry
is currently worth $3.7 trillion – figures
bound to attract new players to the field.
After expanding into living with WeLive,
office company WeWork launched its first
holistic wellness space: Rise by We. In
line with the company’s ethos, the facility
provides group fitness sessions, personal
training and a complete spa experience,
all under one roof.
New residential approaches make
a visit to the spa a daily event. A whole
floor is devoted to wellness at Zaha
Hadid’s acclaimed residential building in
New York City. The residents of 520 West
28 th can enjoy a sizable skylit pool, a fully
equipped gym, a 24-hour juice bar and
much more. Meanwhile, new products
like chromotherapy showers offer a
taste of the same to those living in more
traditional houses.
As spas consolidate their
mainstream position, designers are
recognizing their potential as creative
spaces. Inspired by galleries, museums
and even start-up design outfits, the spa
is becoming a conceptual happening.
At last year’s London Design Festival,
a collaboration between Mondrian
London and Bompas & Parr resulted in
a health-and-beauty evening that added
an experimental edge to the world of
wellness with treatments such as a
‘shadow wrap’ and a curated menu of
food and drink. – JS

A focus on quality results in products like Geberit’s Setaplano shower
tray, which seamlessly combines tray, installation frame and pipes,
leaving nothing to detract from the experience itself.

Continuing the spa makeover at home are Touch Columns from Systempool, part of
Spain’s Porcelanosa Group. Touch, which enhances the sensory aspect of bathing, includes
chromotherapy, an electronic control system and a massage option.
