Playing on the simple adage ‘out of sight, out of mind’, KLEMENS SCHILLINGER’s Offline Lamp
calls for an act of interchange between object and user. The lamp illuminates only when an
object is placed and ‘locked’ into a smartphone-sized compartment, making detachment from
virtual reality a prerequisite for usage and redirecting attention to other tasks.

Urban-design technologists have reimagined the pedestrian crossing for those of us unable to
take our eyes off our smartphones. UMBRELLIUM’s Starling Crossing features LED lights that
are embedded in the road to alert individuals to potential danger by responding to real-time
conditions. Starling identifies pedestrians, cyclists and cars. It promises to better orchestrate
traffic in the city and thus reduce the 7,000 accidents occurring at UK crossings every year.
