MATERIALS – In spite of a myriad options
within easy reach, designers often rely on
standard methods, running the risk of making
products that are undistinctive. Moving beyond
tradition and conventional ways of working
is a young generation of creatives who are
experimenting with innovative techniques.
Showcased at the 15th edition of Pure Talents,
an annual event hosted by IMM Cologne, their
designs feature unusual materials that surprised
visitors to the fair. – SLA

Materials are NOT WHAT THEY SEEM

Cellastic, a chair by Japanese designer HIROYUKI MORITA, stands out
among a plethora of models currently saturating the furniture industry.
Morita pours liquid latex into a mould which is ‘laced’ with a pattern of
nylon cords that vaguely resemble the molecular structure of organic
cells. When the latex has cured, he uses the elastic material to make the
shell of a chair that adapts to the curves of the human body.

ALEJANDRA PERINI collaborated with GONZALO SANCHEZ
DE LOLLANO and RAÚL ARRIBAS DE MIGUEL to design
Cétoine, a metal stool with a shimmering, colour-changing
surface: a reference to the rose chafer (Cetonia aurata), the
beetle for which the piece is named. Stools can be connected
seamlessly to produce a larger seating object.
